Tryptamine is a monoamine alkaloid found in plants, animals, and fungi. It contains an indole nucleus and is structurally similar to tryptophan (minus one carboxyl group), hence its name. It is present in trace amounts in the brains of lactating animals and is thought to act as a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter. Tryptamine is a class of compounds with tryptamine as parent structure, containing many biologically active substances, such as neurotransmitters. Tryptamine is a biogenic imine derived from decarboxylation of tryptophan. It stimulates smooth muscle contraction. Found in animals and plants. It is formed by the oxidation of amine oxidase. It is the precursor of Harman (→ Harman alkaloid) form Chemicalbook. The 5-hydroxyl derivative (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is present in mammalian plasma and amphibian skin and has vasoconstrictive effects.
